Sara Gwendolyn Frostic

- - - observer of - and part of - - -
the wondrous order of the universe
- -the rhythms of the seasons
- - the stars by night
- - sunsets and dawns
and all things that live and breath - -
wandered through fields and woods
stopping here and there to sketch a
blade of grass - - a bird - - - or a
leaf blown by the wind . . . . .

Listening - - - -
to the wildwind symphonies -
Seeing - - - -
each tiny bit o' loveliness - - -
Then entirely by hand - she carved
each block to capture in print a bit
of the fleeting loveliness' one finds if one takes the time to see . . . . .

Her books - filled with the joyousness
of the woods and the open fields -
- - - - - and the harmonious unity
that synchronizes all of life ... express
that indefinable something that lies
deep in the hearts of all.............

Gwen passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 25, 2001. She was born April 26, 1906 in Sandusky, Michigan to Fred W. and Sara (Alexander) Frostic. As a well-known author and lecturer Gwen shared her observations of the universe. She was owner and president of Presscraft Papers, Gwen Frostic Prints, of Benzonia.

Over the years Gwen had been awarded honorary degrees from many colleges and universities. In 1978 Michigan Governor William Milliken proclaimed May 23rd as Gwen Frostic Day in Michigan, and in 1986 she was inducted into the Michigan Woman's Hall of Fame.

Long before her death she wrote her epitaph:

"Here lies one doubly blessed.
She was happy and she knew it."
